Some of our most interesting commissions begin when the boundaries between art, architecture and function start to disappear — when a sculpture becomes part of a wall, a doorway, a staircase or an interior.
At Falconer Art Studios, we create bespoke sculptural installations for residential, hospitality and commercial spaces. These works are conceived in direct response to their architectural setting, considering scale, material, movement, light and the way people experience a space.
The result is sculpture that does not simply sit within the architecture. It becomes part of it.
Responding to Space
Every architectural space presents its own possibilities.
A large wall might call for a sweeping relief. A double-volume entrance can accommodate sculpture at a scale that would overwhelm a conventional room. A doorway offers an opportunity for something tactile and unexpected.
Rather than designing an artwork in isolation and finding somewhere to place it afterwards, we prefer to consider the sculpture and its setting together.
Sightlines, proportions, surrounding materials and natural light all influence the work. Even the way a person approaches or moves past a sculpture can become part of the design.
Beyond the Conventional Artwork
Sculptural installations can take many forms.
They might occupy walls, ceilings, entrances, stairwells, courtyards or overlooked transitional spaces. They can be purely sculptural or incorporate a practical function as handles, screens, lighting, water features or architectural details.
Materials might include bronze, stainless steel, steel, resin or combinations developed specifically for the project.
What matters is not fitting the work into a predetermined category, but finding the right response to the space.
Working with Architects & Designers
The strongest sculptural installations often develop through collaboration.
We work with architects, interior designers, landscape architects and private clients, either developing an idea from the beginning or helping to realise an existing creative concept.
Our studio and foundry capabilities allow us to take a project from initial sketches and visualisations through sculpting, prototyping and material development to fabrication, casting, finishing and installation.
This makes it possible to consider the practical realities of making and installing a piece while the design itself is still evolving.
Making Sculpture Part of the Architecture
A sculptural installation can transform a space without necessarily dominating it.
Sometimes it becomes the focal point. Sometimes it is discovered gradually. And sometimes it performs such an integral architectural function that the distinction between sculpture and building becomes difficult to define.
Those are often the projects that interest us most.
